Gladiator is a Latin word which implies ‘’swordsman’’. Gladiator game.This swordsman is armed and impresses the spectators with other gladiators in states that are either Roman Republic or Roman Empire during violent periods. In the entertainment the gladiator always condemned the act of violence.  Some of gladiators volunteer to contingency their lives. Most of the gladiators were abominated as slaves, went to school under difficult circumstances, they were even socially underrated, and sometimes discriminated.

During the entertainment, the gladiators offer the audiences example of Rome’s martial ethics. The gladiators could stimulate affection amongst the audience about the importance of dying well.

Peak of the game

This kind of games lasted for about a thousand of years. The climax of this game was reached between the first century and the second century. From second century the game started declining with finally coming to an end during the early 5th century after the introduction of Christianity as a state church of the Roman Empire. Though there was a decline in this gaming beast hunts continues with the game into the 6th century.

Gladiators were owned by some big people and became big business to venture into. The ownership of gladiators by Roman politics gave them muscle. Gladiator games associate with beast spread throughout the Republic and even went beyond its boundaries.

History of the games

Initially there was debate on the sources of gladiator games. The origin of the gladiator games were first believed to be developed by Estruscan. Later on another writer which was from another generation by the name Livy revealed that the games were first held by the Campanians during celebration of their victory against the Samnites. Historians from Roman Empire maintained that gladiator games were adopted from foreign countries.  They claimed that the most likely possible source of gladiator games is Estrucan.

Campanian was the earliest roman gladiator school. Images from Campanian when compared to those from Estrucan reveal that the first source of gladiator is Campanian.

Decline of the game

These games lasted for about a thousand years. During the closing years of politically and socially unstable, sponsors of the gladiator games were offered with expensive but effective chances for self-promotion and thus entertainment was offered to their clients at a cheap cost but very exciting.

One of causes of the decline of the gladiator game was the crisis of 3rd century which imposed the increase demand of the military on the imperial purse. This crisis never recovered by the Roman Empire. Due to public interest towards this game, emperors continue to subsidize the game. Tertulian who was a Christian writer, during the early 3rd century AD, appreciated the power of gladiator over the Christian flock. Though with his remarks, he was forced to blunt. There was a claim that those playing gladiators were murders and pagans. Constantine was not happy with snatching of children at arena by gladiators. Ten year later, the gladiator was banned.

Later on, around 330s sanctioned was made by an imperially suggesting that legislation to restrict the games was proven to ineffective and Constantine refused to obey his own law by banning the game.

 Types of Roman gladiator games

Women gladiators

These types of gladiator games came into existence in 60s AD. They came as exotic markets. In Ethiopia that is in 66s AD women, men and children fought to entertain King Tridates I of Armenia.

Emperors

Under this type there was a participant who was known as Commodus. It was claimed that Commodus killed 100 lions in a day and thus he would be permitted to demonstrate his marksmanship around the arena.
